Freshman Brian Wright's first collegiate goal broke a scoreless tie in the 69th minute to lift the Vermont Catamounts to a 1-0 victory over Colgate on the first day of the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Windjammer Classic at Virtue Field on Friday.
The Catamounts move to 2-0-1 overall, while Colgate falls to 0-3-0 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Colgate's best opportunity came in the 67th minute when Tanner Schilling drilled the post with a low drive. On the Catamounts next possession newcomer Bernard Yeboah picked up a pass from the midfield and was able to create a 2-on-1 situation with Wright. Yeboah slid a pass from across the goal mouth to feed Wright who was able to finish it off with a low shot from six yards out and give UVM the 1-0 lead.
Vermont held off the Raiders the rest of the way to earn its second win of the season and first at Virtue Field.
Conor Leland was credited with two saves to earn his second shutout of the year and eighth of his career. He moves into a tie for sixth among UVM's goalkeeping leaders in shutouts. Ricky Brown finished the game with two saves in the Colgate net.
The Raiders held an 8-3 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks in the game.
In the first game of the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Windjammer Classic, New Hampshire defeated UMass, 1-0. The tournament continues on Sunday (Sept. 8) when New Hampshire takes on Colgate at 11 a.m. and Vermont hosts UMass at 1:30 p.m.
