Schumer wants to focus on issues in United States

Posted: Updated:

President Obama continues to stump for Syrian strikes after the regime there used chemical weapons on its own people last month. A vote in the Senate is expected Wednesday.

President Obama and both Democratic and Republican party leadership are pushing for a series of missile strikes with no boots on the ground, and lasting a maximum of 90 days.

But in a recent press conference, Sen. Chuck Schumer(D-NY) said although chemical weapons deserve attention -- he would rather focus on issues in the United States.

"The overwhelming view from Americans is enough in the Middle East let's pay attention to America; I agree with that position," he said, "we have to focus on jobs and income in the middle class."

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) - the country's most senior senator - still has not decided how he will vote. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has voiced reservations, while Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) remains on the fence.
