MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says he is not excited about a Canadian proposal to build a pipeline that would carry tar sands oil through Quebec to a seaport not far from the Maine border.

Shumlin, at a meeting in Quebec of eastern Canadian premiers and New England governors, says he expressed his concerns that the tar sands oil from Alberta would contribute to global warming.

But Shumlin says it's a Canadian issue.

TransCanada Corp. has proposed the $12 billion project that would carry up to 1.1 million barrels of crude per day from the western province of Alberta to New Brunswick by 2018.

Speaking at the conference, Maine Gov. Paul LePage said he supported the proposal because he would prefer to see oil moved by pipeline than rail car.
