Sen. Patrick Leahy says America needs to get smarter about its marijuana laws.
Leahy's Judiciary Committee held a hearing Tuesday on how to reconcile conflicting state and federal marijuana laws. Pot use is illegal at the federal level with weighty criminal penalties, while states have decriminalized and even legalized its use.
Leahy applauds the Justice Department for saying it will allow Washington and Colorado's new laws to stand.
"Federal agents and prosecutors have scarce investigative resources. I really don't think they should be devoting them to pursuing low-level users of marijuana who are complying with the laws of their states," said Leahy, D-Vermont.
Others on the committee criticized the Obama administration for failing to enforce existing laws that it does not like.
