Leahy, Sanders support diplomacy in Syria crisis

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

President Obama made his case to the American people Tuesday night for using military force in Syria. But the president also said he would hold off to see if new diplomatic efforts will succeed.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, says he's encouraged by this latest development but says there needs to be "verifiable action by the Syrian regime to relinquish control of its chemical weapons arsenal and agreement to other conditions."

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, also says he's "pleased to see (the U.S. is) now working with Russia, France, the UK, China and the United Nations to remove chemical weapons from Syria - without involving the United States in the bloody and complicated Syrian civil war."
