MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -

Middlebury College is investigating reports of vandalism to a 9/11 memorial on campus.

A photo from the campus newspaper, The Middlebury Campus, shows student protesters removing nearly 3,000 small American flags from the lawn in front of Mead Chapel.

One witness to the removal told the campus reporter they were "confiscating" the flags in protest of "America's imperialism."

Middlebury President Ron Liebowitz issued a statement condemning the act. He said, "We live in an academic community ... that requires of all a degree of respect and civility that was seriously undermined and compromised by this selfish act of protest."
