ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont town is getting ready to close a deal to sell a dilapidated vacant house for $1 so it can be demolished and a new house built on the site.
The town of St. Johnsbury is planning to close on the sale of the house on St. Mary Street later this month.
The town took possession of the property after it failed to sell at a tax sale.
The Caledonian Record reports the Burlington-based Vermont Housing Finance Agency is going to buy the property, demolish the house, build an affordable single family house and sell it.
Town officials say the program is a viable way for the community to add to its tax roll and erase an eyesore.
