Battle of Plattsburgh commemoration continues

Posted: Updated:

Spectator Abby Schaub commented on her favorite part of the event, "I liked when I saw my friends from school."

Commemoration committee member, Gary Vancour, explained some of the events origins.

"It's a special day because we have so many friends and neighbors that have come but it's also to recognize the 199th anniversary of the Battle of Plattsburgh. We like to recognize and pay respect to all participants, whether they were enemy combatants that day or not.

The parade is to recognize the sacrifice and dedication of both sides. With the result of the battle that took place here, Sept. 11th, we ended up remaining a nation, we are part of the United States, not part of Canada. So that part is very significant.

In the War of 1812 there are several historians that say this was the most strategic battle of the war.

This was a ten day affair, we started a week ago and tomorrow we end with the children's fair... which is extremely popular." said Vancour.
