It may be a favorite among kids, but Mac & Cheese is a dish we can all enjoy.
And today it was the highlight of the first annual Great Mac and Cheese Challenge in Windsor. About 20 of the region's top chefs and restaurants cooked up a special batch for the judges. The Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company, the Harpoon Brewery, and a host of other sponsors made the event possible. Organizers say the secret to great mac and cheese is the milk.
"It all starts with the individual producers, the guys who work hard on the farm. Farming is a tough way of life, its 365 days a year, cows don't take a day off. I think the dedication speaks volumes to the ability for us to make good cheeses," said Rick Woods from Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company.
All proceeds from today's event benefit the Vermont Foodbank, Sustainable Woodstock, and Vermont Dairy Foundation.
And here are the winners:
Judge's choice - 1st place went to Singleton's Market in Quechee. New Hampshire's Hanover Inn came in 2nd. And, the Home Hill Inn in Plainfield came in 3rd.
Kid's Choice - Singleton's Market was also the favorite among the kids.
People's Choice - Went to the Harrington House Inn in Bethel.
