German company dropped from NEK development plan

Posted: Updated:

One of the anchor tenants in Bill Stenger's multi-million Northeast Kingdom Economic Development plan has fallen through.

German window manufacturing company, Menck, will not be opening a factory in Newport as planned.  Vermont Digger reports that Stenger pulled the plug on the $20 million deal after the company said it would be outfitting its plant with European machinery. The imported equipment would not apply toward the project's job creation requirements under the federal EB-5 program.  Stenger called the loss "a bump in the road," and said there are other companies interested in filling the gap.
