Congressman Peter Welch brought together employees of Vermont colleges Monday to discuss legislation to create an affordable and flexible education system.
Welch says regulatory relief and flexibility for institutions is key to eliminating the divide between for profit and not for profit schools. Another complaint -- making federal funding contingent on to student performance. Attendees say their efforts to raise money for educational programs is a also burden.
"When you graduate with student loan debt, it's a serious problem. But 25, 35 thousand dollars of student loan debt in fact is about the price of a new car. It doesn't depreciate the minute you leave the parking lot. In fact, it's something that appreciates over time. But It is the one simple metric that leads to future success and greater income for individual students," said Vermont College of Fine Arts President Tom Greene.
Congressman Welch says he is confident Republicans will support this legislation, but believes there is still work to be done.
