Vt. police: Kids to blame for runaway freight cars

BETHEL, Vt. -

Authorities say it appears a couple of kids were to blame for a pair of runaway freight cars in Bethel last month.

Vermont State police say the brakes on the two cars were released, causing the cars to roll down a spur and crash into a third car, which derailed. No one was hurt, but police say if the brakes on the third car had not held, the 250,000-pound cars could have plunged down an embankment toward several houses.

A tip led police to a group of kids who had been seen playing in the area. Two of them were cited to appear in juvenile court.
