ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

Embezzlement charges have been dropped against a former Abenaki chief.

April St. Francis Merrill was accused last year of stealing $35,000 from the Abenaki Tribal Council. Police say she made ATM withdrawals and used the money for grocery shopping, flower purchases and the installation of a deck on her home.

This month the Franklin County prosecutor moved to dismiss the charges without prejudice, meaning the charges could be re-filed.
