MORETOWN, Vt. (AP) - Vermont's environmental court has ruled that the Moretown Landfill must remain closed and be capped.
The court has affirmed the Agency of Natural Resources decision to deny recertification of the landfill.
The landfill was one of only two in Vermont when it was closed by the state at the end of March because of environmental concerns and odor complaints.
The landfill reopened for local customers only in April, but closed again July 15. Its owners have indicated they plan to apply for a permit to open a new section.
Environmental Conservation Commissioner David Mears said Tuesday that the order requires prompt and orderly closure along with extensive remedial efforts related to groundwater and odor, to ensure that the landfill will not negatively affect nearby residents or the environment.
