Getting 'arrested' for a good cause

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

There's no get out of jail free card for these jailbirds. but there is one way to get out.

"They're all given a bail goal of $2,400, which sends three kids to an accessible camp that we fund," said Elizabeth Hutson of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Burlington Lock-Up is a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It raises money for kids with disabilities throughout the region. Burlington executives who participate have two months to reach their fundraising goal. If they don't, they're arrested by a bounty hunter and taken to court... better known as Ri Ra's Irish Pub. After seeing the judge, it's off to jail. The next step for the jailbirds is to raise enough money to post bail.

For Marie Gaudette, $900 isn't bad, but she's planning on raising at least another $700.

"I have some work to do and some emails to do, but I'm hopeful it'll happen," Gaudette said. "Everyone I emailed said only if you send me a picture of you behind bars wearing the jail uniform. I said you know what, whatever it takes."

"Ideally, we'll hit between 55 and 60 and beat the last time we did this is 2009, which was right around $50,000," Hutson said.

Once that goal is reached, this may be the only time participants will be proud to say they were arrested and would do it all again.
