Rally for paid sick days

Posted: Updated:

Proponents of guaranteed sick days are campaigning for a new law.

Former Governor Madeleine Kunin, lawmakers and advocates rallied in front of the Red Hen Bakery in Middlesex Thursday morning. They say 40 percent of the population-- mostly in service industries-- do not receive paid sick days. They want to see every worker offered a minimum of seven per year.

Kunin says calling sick days a benefit is misleading because workers earn the time off.

"This is not a giveaway. This is not simply charity. This is something that people deserve because they worked for it," Kunin said.

Burlington Representatives Jill Krowinski and Johanna Donovan plan to sponsor legislation again and argue the move would benefit, not hurt the business community.

Advocates say polling conducted by a Washington, D.C., firm indicates 72 percent of Vermonters support such a measure.
