SHELBURNE, Vt. -

A man accused of multiple counts of animal cruelty was elected vice chairman of the Shelburne Republicans.

George Wilson is charged with six counts of animal cruelty.  Prosectors say he kept horses and bulls in the barn of his Shelburne property for years, never letting them outside.  Three horses were found in small stalls, standing in manure and the remains of other horses, their hooves severely overgrown.  But that didn't stop Wilson from being elected vice chair of the town Republicans this week.  In a statement Sunday, the former WCAX employee, said he has withdrawn his name from consideration. He is due back in criminal court October 11.
