Crews respond to Barre fire

BARRE, Vt. -

A house fire at 38 Berlin Street left a quiet Barre neighborhood wondering how the blaze began.

"We came downstairs and there was just black smoke everywhere -- it smelt terrible," said Mallory Parry, a nearby neighbor.

As the fire spread, one of the residents of the home frantically called 9-1-1. "The young girl that lives there just came running down the street and was like, 'What's happening to my house.' She was crying. She called the fire station and they all came here," Parry said.

Officials say the fire began in the kitchen, but could not immediately say what triggered the blaze. No one was in the house when the fire began.

"I was home making dinner, heard the scanner and I came down here and I saw smoke and they were working on the roof," said Patrick Willis, another neighbor.

"It took about 45 minutes to get everything under control. We had mutual aid from Montpelier and Barre Town," said Barre City Deputy Fire Chief Joe Aldsworth.

The two adults and child that live in the home have been temporarily displaced.  The fire department continues to investigate the cause.
