Web Watch: Blackberry buyout

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Remember back to the Blackberry, crackberry craze? The mini-computer like smartphone that everyone had to have.

Well, in recent years Blackberry has taken a hit and is now up for sale.

The company has agreed to sell itself to its largest shareholder, Fairfax financial holdings. Its final price tag was listed at $4.7 billion. Now Blackberry's shareholders will get $9 in cash for every share. Shares plunged after Friday's news that the company had lost a billion dollars and laid off 4,500 workers.

Blackberry cellphones began the transformation of the way we communicate today. They were the original on-your-body emailing device that kept you up-to-date with your work even while on the go. The simplistic keyboard and PC like operating system had a signature look. However, once the iPhone and Android market caught fire in 2007, it was hard for Blackberry to evolve with them.

Reports show Apple Inc. made more last weekend in iPhone sales than Blackberry will get in total for its company buyout.
