INDIAN LAKE, N.Y. (AP) - State forest rangers have posted notices along Adirondack trails warning hikers about aggressive black bears after a woman says she stabbed one of the animals that got too close.
The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that the woman was hiking alone on the Northville-Placid Trail in Hamilton County last Wednesday when three bears began following her. She made several attempts to scare them off, but they continued to follow her.
She told DEC officials that one of the bears got too close, so she stabbed it with a knife. The bear fled. The woman wasn't harmed.
Officials say it was one of several recent encounters with nuisance bears along that stretch of trail in the town of Indian Lake, 80 miles northwest of Albany.
