Burlington City Council won't oppose gas pipeline

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Burlington City Council will not oppose a natural gas pipeline extension south from Chittenden County.

Vermont Gas is seeking approval to bring gas service to communities in Addison and Rutland counties. The plan is meeting strong opposition from environmental groups.

Even though Burlington has a complete natural gas infrastructure, three Progressives on the City Council proposed a resolution that would have expressed opposition to transporting gas through any region of the state. The full Council rejected the resolution on a vote of 11-3. Mayor Miro Weinberger, D-Burlington, called the proposal "deeply hypocritical."
