NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) - Authorities say a family is unhurt but four cats died in house fire in the southern Vermont town of Newfane.
Fire officials say the family was working outside when the fire started Wednesday afternoon.
The fire chief says by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread through the roof.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports that fire crews had to run nearly five miles of hose to the house, which was set back in the woods.
The fire is believed to have started on the second floor, possibly in the kitchen.
The home is likely to be a total loss.
