NY to help pay cost of Amtrak train to Vt.

Posted: Updated:

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The state of New York is going to help pay the cost of running Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express to the Vermont city of Rutland.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation says New York is going to contribute $800,000 toward the costs of operating the train that runs from New York City to Rutland via Albany.

The change came after new rules reduced the federal contribution to short passenger lines.

The Agency's Chris Cole tells the Rutland Herald Vermont's share of the Ethan Allen has dropped $100,000 to $1.4 million, but any savings are more than offset by an increase of more than $2 million in costs to run the Vermonter line, the train that runs up the eastern side of Vermont and on to St. Albans.
