WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - A former Vermont prison guard has pleaded guilty to having sex with an inmate in a case that came to light after she became pregnant with the inmate's child.
Thirty-year-old Leanne Salls received a one-year deferred sentence after pleading guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of prohibited acts.
The Valley News reported that the tryst came to light when prison guards confiscated a note that the inmate sent to Salls inquiring about her pregnancy.
Officials say the encounter was consensual and occurred in 2011 at Southeast State Correctional Facility. The child is now 1.
Salls was initially charged with sexual exploitation of an inmate, a felony that carries a five-year maximum prison sentence, but the charge was later reduced.
