Vt. food assistance program faces cuts

Posted: Updated:

Families receiving assistance under the 3SquaresVT program will soon be facing financial cuts.

The program allows qualified households to receive money or credit toward food each month. 3SquaresVT received additional funds from the federal government in 2009 to help stimulate the economy after the Great Recession, allowing them to pay out more to residents in the program. Those funds are scheduled to expire Nov. 1. About 50,000 households will be affected.

"The average reduction for a Vermont family of three is a loss of $29 a month. For a family of four, it's $36 a month. So, that's significant," said Dave Yacovone, the commissioner of the Vt. Department of Children and Families.

The program spent about $150 million a year providing assistance for residents in need.

Those seeing a decrease in their benefits will be notified this week about how they will be affected and how to get more information.
