BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The video website that has transformed pop culture is making a surprise announcement.

YouTube is known as a trailblazing forum, but now the website is taking a page out of television's book in hosting a music awards show.

Lady Gaga and Eminem have already inked deals to perform at this first-time event along with Arcade Fire. The YouTube Music Awards are set for November 3. Jason Schwartzman is slated to host the show. It will take place at Pier 36 in New York City and streamed live around the world. Nominees will be announced in the coming weeks. Fans will pick their favorite videos and explain why they love them.

This is considered a surprising move by the Google-owned company because usually it is setting the tone to be followed. These television-style events have been going on for years, but they are a known moneymaker when it comes to advertising. YouTube has been a major factor in the music video evolution from television to the web. It has developed into a launching pad for so many artists' careers because of its popularity.
