A federal court jury in Rutland has found Frank Caraballo guilty of murder in the slaying of a woman he believed had stolen drugs from him.

The Massachusetts man was convicted of the murder of Melissa Barratt in Dummerston back in 2011, however Carballo was acquitted of firing the weapon that killed her. Vermont U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin says in some drug cases suspects are convicted of murder even if they did not directly cause the death.

Caraballo was also convicted of conspiring to sell drugs and using a gun in a crime.

Prosecutors said Caraballo was running a drug network in Brattleboro, and he believed Barratt stole $10,000 in drugs from him.

Caraballo's lawyers argued there is no proof Caraballo was at the scene and it's just as likely Caraballo's partner killed Barratt.
