Concerns about the safety of the F-35
prompted the Green Mountain Boys to speak up.
In a press conference
Thursday, Vermont National Guard leaders addressed the safety records of their
Opponents argue the new aircraft has a
greater chance of crashing over commercial planes.
But guard members say the F-35 will
have been in the air for a while by the time it lands in Vermont.
"When we get the F-35
in 2020 it will have been flying for 14 years. When we received the F-16 in
1986 it was flying for 12," said Col. David Baczewski of the Vermont
Guard members say the
issue of safety is on the table as a scare tactic to derail the F-35 proposal.
