Vt. Guard addresses safety of F-35

COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Concerns about the safety of the F-35 prompted the Green Mountain Boys to speak up.

In a press conference Thursday, Vermont National Guard leaders addressed the safety records of their fighter jets.

Opponents argue the new aircraft has a greater chance of crashing over commercial planes.

But guard members say the F-35 will have been in the air for a while by the time it lands in Vermont.

"When we get the F-35 in 2020 it will have been flying for 14 years. When we received the F-16 in 1986 it was flying for 12," said Col. David Baczewski of the Vermont National Guard.

Guard members say the issue of safety is on the table as a scare tactic to derail the F-35 proposal.
