Chefs from Vt. health care facilities face off

Slice, sizzle and serve: a few of the many tasks for chefs competing in this year's "Seafood Throwdown." And the secret seafood ingredient is Northeast Haddock. Three teams of chefs from Fletcher Allen Health Care, Central Vermont Medical Center and Wake Robin took to the grills for the ultimate faceoff.

"We cure our own bacon and hams in-house. We butcher whole hogs, so we brought some of our homemade bacon, house-made bacon," said John Gallaher, a chef at Wake Robin.

Reporter Melissa Sheketoff: Do you think that will pull you ahead in the competition?

John Gallaher: I hope so. Nobody else has bacon.

"We try to make food exciting because we all enjoy eating it. And we try to make it fun," organizer Richard Jarmuse said.

Jarmuse is the executive chef at Fletcher Allen. He says the hospital is dedicated to buying local and serving food that pleases more than just the patients.

"UVM students come here and eat, people off the street, we've even had people call and ask for reservations. Many stories of people coming for lunch then coming back for dinner," Jarmuse said.

Fletcher Allen has expanded menus, incorporating more local food options. The cook-off is a chance to highlight that effort.

Chefs firing up the grill to bring awareness to eating local and to win bragging rights for their health care facility.

And in the end, Wake Robin brought home the bacon, taking the top prize.
