Just getting launched was fun out here on Osmore Pond. That's Nick and me in the canoe and Kate and my photographer Darin Boutet rowing along beside us.
"It's definitely a hidden gem. If more people saw this place, I'm sure more people would be here," says Nick Caputo.
On this day, it was just us and one other canoe on this 48-acre pond.
"You can spend the day utilizing the park. There's picnic sites, there's four lean-tos and seven tent sites you can camp at, you can rent boats and go boating, you can fish, there's hiking around the pond," Caputo says. "This is quintessential Vermont. The fall, the colors are beautiful."
"In the wintertime, there's a lot of activities as well -- ice fishing, bass trails that go through as well," he adds. "Cross country skiing -- there's something for everyone and there's something for every season."
In 26,000 acres of Groton State Forest in the town of Peacham. From the town of Marshfield you can be here in 15 minutes. It's right off Route 2.
"Turn on 232, which was constructed by the CCC," says Caputo. "The first tract of land the state obtained was in 1919 and it's grown since then."
Almost everything you see out here, from the fireplaces to the buildings were all made by Civilian Conservation Corp, with a lot of it being built starting in 1933.
"The white house when you come into New Discovery state Park, that was the CCC headquarter office for the entire forest back in the 30's," he says. "The Civilian Conservation Corp, it was part of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. It put young men to work during the Great Depression. They were paid $30 a month and they had to send $25 home to their families."
"Word just hasnt gotten out and as soon as word does get out it won't be what it is now," says Kate Abrams. "I'm always telling people about this place."
She loves the solitude out here, but not the row boat so much.
"I don't know how to work this thing," she says.
After rowing our photographer Darin around, he took the oars for the ride back in -- the end of a perfect day!
