NEWFANE, Vt. -

Severe storms knocked out power to thousands of Vermonters.

In Newfane, trees and power lines toppled, closing Route 30 Monday night.

A Green Mountain Power spokeswoman says about 8,000 homes lost electricity overnight, from Montpelier down to Brattleboro.

GMP had crews ready.

About 300 customers were still in the dark when this story was published late Tuesday afternoon.
