A new bridge that means easier access to the VAST trail system was installed Thursday in St. Johnsbury.
The bridge now crosses Mont Vernon Street and will eventually be open to bicyclists and snowmobilers in the winter. It marks the first phase of a new connection on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. You'll now be able bike or snowmobile from South Main Street in St. Johnsbury all the way to Danville.
"Sounds like it's gonna be fun. Pedaling all the way down to Joe's Pond from St. J... it's uphill all the way. Of course coming back you can practically coast down the hill. It's gonna be fun when it's finished," said Gavin McDonough, a bicyclist.
Crews will be installing a second bridge in Danville next week.
The long-term goal is to extend the trail all the way across the state to Swanton.
