Vt. court gives newspaper access to records

Posted: Updated:

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Supreme Court has upheld a lower court ruling giving the Rutland Herald newspaper access to records related to an investigation into city police officers who were disciplined for viewing and sending pornography at work.

The higher court on Friday denied an appeal by the city, which raised concerns about privacy rights of city employees.

The Supreme Court ruled that the public's right to know the name and activities of a government employee while at work outweigh the privacy rights of that person.

The court said one cannot reasonably expect a high level of privacy in viewing and sending pornography on work computers while on duty at a public law enforcement agency.
