DHMC recruits coders

Posted: Updated:

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is looking for skilled coders and they are getting help from a non-profit in Vermont.

A medical coder analyzes procedures and assigns proper standardized codes used for billing. Monday evening Dartmouth-Hitchcock has partnered with Vermont HITEC to recruit candidates.  The orientation session is the first step in the applicant process to find ten coders for the medical center.  The U.S. Department of Labor is helping to make the 10-week program possible.

"In the world of health care, the coding role is a critical role. It's the position that really translated the services provided into codes that the insures can pay for.  The coding skill set is a very scarce skill set in the market and it is very difficult to recruit people would have this expertise," said Mary Kay Boudewyns with DHMC.

There is a lot of competition for those 10 spots.  Officials said 711 applicants registered to attend the orientation session.  More than 100 people were placed on a wait list.
