White House garden falls victim to shutdown

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The government shutdown has not been good for the White House vegetable garden.

Students from Milton are among dozens who visited the White House this year to help the first lady plant and then harvest some of the vegetables.

But the shutdown means staffers are not available to weed or harvest. So, vegetables are rotting and weeds are taking over.

The garden not only provides healthy foods for the White House chef to showcase, it also provides produce to Washington food shelves. Deliveries are on hold until the shutdown is over.
