NEWPORT, Vt. -

He claims he was insane at the time, but a man involved in a lengthy standoff in Newport will go to trial.

Police say in September, Derick Niles, 36, was armed and held police at bay, after claiming his house was under siege.

He filed a motion from jail asking to plead not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.

The court ordered a psychiatric evaluation.

Tuesday, prosecutors and the defense agreed Niles is competent to stand trial.

He's still in jail charged with reckless endangerment.
