BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The number of people signing up for Vermont's new health care system continues to crawl along.

Tuesday when WCAX asked for the numbers, officials said 631 people had signed up for Vermont Health Connect. Two days later, that number had increased by 81 people, bringing the total number to 712 people.

That's less than 1 percent of the people expected to enroll for the new insurance program that begins Jan. 1. It's expected 100,000 people will be forced to enroll. Officials say they hope 70,000 will be signed up by Jan. 1.

Although people can sign up, a glitch in the system means you still can't pay for the plan. The Shumlin administration is confident that computer problem will be fixed by Nov. 1.

The health care exchange website is mandated by the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare. It allows consumers to compare approved health care plans side by side to pick which is best for them.
