Conference committee set to take up Farm Bill

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

With the government funding crisis temporarily resolved there's hope in Congress of tackling other big issues, including the farm bill.

The House and Senate have each passed differing versions of the omnibus legislation that governs everything from agriculture subsidies to food stamps. The two chambers are far apart on several issues. But New York Congressman Bill Owens (D-New York), who will be part of the negotiations, says he's optimistic a deal can be reached before the end of the year.

"I think we can be having conversations about the budget, the deficit, debt ceiling on one track. And at the same time dealing with the farm bill. No reason we can't get it done," Owens said.

One area of disagreement is over a dairy support program. The Senate bill would create an insurance program meant to stabilize prices by limiting the supply of milk. But the House struck the program from its bill.

The conference committee is schedule to meet starting next week, because the Senate is taking this week off.
