Web Watch: Manly groceries

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK CITY -

Every family has its own way of doling out chores to make sure they get done, for example laundry, mowing the lawn, taking out the trash and groceries.

A new study by the Wall Street Journal says more men are steering the grocery cart these days, and food companies are taking note.

The report says almost half of the men they polled between the ages of 18 to 64 are what it calls "manfluencers," which means they are responsible for half the grocery shopping and meal preparation in their household. This research is presenting a new opportunity for companies that make the food men normally shy away from.

Foods like yogurt and hard cider normally appeal to women, but now some of those companies are changing their looks to attract a male consumer. Darker color packaging and larger portions seem to be doing the trick for now. Also using buzzwords like ultimate appear to be successful in drawing men's attention. The shape of the packaging also plays a role.

Men want to buy things that make them look manlier the report finds.
