US prosecuting many more heroin cases in Vt.

Posted: Updated:

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The number of heroin cases prosecuted by the Vermont office of the United States attorney is more than double from last year and eight times as many as 2009.

Vermont U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin says heroin prosecutions are a significant part of his office's case load. But he says there is still more work to do.

In April, Coffin and other Vermont law enforcement officials announced they were cracking down on a worsening heroin problem in the state.

Coffin tells the Burlington Free Press progress has been made, but a series of recent arrests shows there is still work to do

In April, Coffin and others said law enforcement efforts have to be accompanied by drug treatment and education programs that will keep people from becoming addicted.
