Milton natural gas leak linked to operator error

Posted: Updated:

Evacuations Friday morning in Milton because of a natural gas leak.

It happened at NG Advantage, the compressed natural gas dealer which is headquartered in the Catamount Industrial Park. A tractor trailer was being loaded to make a delivery when it suddenly began venting gas. The trailer can hold up to 355,000 cubic feet of natural gas and fire officials say it was about two thirds full when they arrived.
"We upon arrival sized up the situation, determined which way the wind was blowing and started evacuating businesses and then staged away for the truck to do its venting," said Milton Fire Chief Don Turner.

"The system itself did work the way it's designed to work, which in case of a fire -- which there wasn't today -- the trailers open up and vent the natural gas into the atmosphere," said Neale Lunderville with NG Advantage.

Lunderville said their preliminary investigation shows a procedural error during the filling of the trailer triggered the release valve.
