Online travel companies sued over local taxes

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Are online travel companies failing to pay taxes?

Several states, including New Hampshire, are suing Priceline, Orbitz, Expedia and Travelocity  for rooms and meals taxes on overnight accommodations and vehicle rentals.

New Hampshire officials say instead of paying the state's 9 percent tax on the higher, retail price that they charge consumers, the companies have been paying taxes on the lower, wholesale rate that they pay vendors.
