UVM sweeps St. Michael's in exhibition opener

The Vermont Catamounts used a balanced scoring attack to post a 79-72 victory over neighboring St. Michael's College in preseason men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday.

Senior Clancy Rugg led six Catamounts in double figures with a team-high 13 points and added five rebounds. Brian Voelkel added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Voelkel also handed out a game-high five assists.

The Purple Knights, who went 14-for-30 from 3-point range in the game, were led by James Cambronne's game-high 17 points. Mike Holton Jr. added 15 points and Dom Ditlefsen chipped in 14 points.

St. Michael's biggest lead of the game was four points at the 17:03 mark of the first half. The Catamounts answered quickly with eight straight points to take their own four-point lead with 14:53 remaining in the first half. A 3-pointer by Greg Grippo and a free throw by Cambronne knotted the game up at 14-14 at the 14:04 mark.

UVM opened up a double-digit lead on the Purple Knights with a 17-5 run and led 31-19 with 5:45 left in the half. Vermont's lead would grow to 15, but Grippo drained a 3-pointer at the halftime horn and the Catamounts led 43-31 at the break.

The Catamounts would maintain a double-digit advantage until the final five minutes of the contest. UVM led 75-58 with 4:28 showing on the clock. The Purple Knights whittled the lead down to four, 76-72, with 31 seconds remaining behind a 12-0 spurt and three consecutive three's, but the Catamounts were able to hold off the late offensive flurry with free throws from Sandro Carissimo and Rugg.

Vermont will play its final preseason game on November 3 when it hosts Concordia (Quebec) at 2 p.m.


Freshmen Kristina White and Kylie Butler combined for 36 points off the bench to help lead the Vermont Catamounts past neighboring St. Michael's College, 80-57, in a women's basketball exhibition game at Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday.

White netted a game-high 19 points behind 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range, while Butler chipped in 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. Senior Sam Simononis added 12 points to round out the double figure scorers for the Catamounts and Niki Taylor led UVM on the boards with seven rebounds, all on the offensive glass.

Mackenzie Burud posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Alexa Long added 16 points and nine boards for the Purple Knights.

Saint Michael's held a 21-11 lead at the 10:40 mark, but the Catamounts used a 15-2 run over the final 5:50 of the half to push out in front 34-30 at the break.

The Catamounts used the momentum from the first half run to out score the Purple Knights 46-27 in the second stanza.

UVM shot 48.6 percent from the field, including a 6-for-9 effort from long range, and held St. Michael's to 25.9 percent shooting on the defensive end in the second half.

The Catamounts will play their final preseason game on November 2 when they host Stonehill College at 2 p.m.
