Web Watch: Google rolls out barges, expands glass

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Industry experts are always trying to find the latest leak in the tech world and the latest news may be coming by sea.

There are reports that Google Inc. is working on large barges across the country.

There are images of what transit officials in San Francisco are calling a vessel. Officials say they are working with Google, but the company has been vague about how it plans to use it.

There are also rumors of other barges being built in Maine and possibly London. The barges are hard to keep a secret since they are four stories tall and about the size of four football fields. Some are speculating they will be mobile marketing and retail centers. Speculators suggest this would help Google "outdo" its main competition, Apple Inc.

In other Google news, the company announced Monday it is expanding its Google glass availability before the final product is rolled out to the public next year. So far about 10,000 people have been testing out the new gear.

Now Google is asking the testers to invite three friends to buy a Google glass for $1,500. Then those who already have the glass will have the option to swap out their glass for a new one that has been upgraded to work with prescription glasses. These glasses also include a single earbud.

So, if you get an email asking you try it out, don't just send it to your junk box.
