BRETTON WOODS, N.H. (AP) - Gov. Maggie Hassan and officials from across New Hampshire are honoring Executive Councilor Ray Burton at the opening ceremony for a scenic overlook in Bretton Woods.
Burton, a Republican, announced last week he will not seek re-election to District 1 because his kidney cancer has returned. He was elected to his first term in 1977 and, aside from a two-year absence early on, has served ever since.
He will be honored Friday at the opening ceremony for the Mount Washington Scenic Overlook, a public-private partnership between the state, the Mount Washington Hotel and CNL Lifestyle properties.
Before the ceremony, the governor and council will hold a special meeting to accept a portrait donated to the state by Burton.
