A big blow to struggling families across the country.
With the stimulus package expiring Friday -- 5-billion dollars have been cut from the Food Stamps program. The average family of four could lose up to 35 dollars in benefits a month.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says that will have a huge impact on families trying to make ends meet.
"Well you know, for some people it doesn't seem like a lot of money, let's go out to lunch, 35 dollars for lunch, for other people it is a question of whether you adequately feed your kids. It's whether you have milk for your children, so 35 dollars is a lot of money for families in need," Sanders explained.
A bill from the GOP-controlled House proposes to cut an additional 4-billion dollars in food stamps under a wide-ranging farm bill.
The program costs 80-billion dollars a year, which has more than double in the last 5 years.
