Sophomore Ethan O'Day led all scorers with a game-high 24 points in 24 minutes of work to lead the Vermont Catamounts to an 86-49 win over Concordia (Quebec) in UVM's final preseason game at Patrick Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
O'Day went 12-for-16 from the field and added five rebounds. Hector Harold, who earned a start, added 10 points and four assists and freshman Dre Wills came off the bench to contribute 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Wills also added five rebounds and three steals in 15 minutes.
Mukiya Post led Concordia with 14 points and Xander Jean added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Stingers.
Concordia's Mike Fosu hit a jumper at the 16:01 mark to tie the game up at 10-10. Vermont answered with a 9-0 spurt to pull out to a 19-10 lead at the 12:03 mark. The Stingers were able to cut the lead to four on a 3-pointer by Jean, but the Catamounts scored seven straight points, including five from Sandro Carissimo, to open up a double-digit advantage, 26-15, with 7:29 left in the half.
Concordia could only get as close at six the rest of the way and UVM took a 41-30 lead into halftime.
The Catamounts carried the momentum into the second stanza and out scored the Stingers 45-19 over the final 45 minutes.
O'Day scored the first eight points of the second half as UVM's lead ballooned to 16 in the first three minutes. Vermont's lead steadily increased and the Catamounts cruised to the victory and closed out the preseason with a 2-0 mark.
Vermont will open the 2013-14 season on Saturday (Nov. 9) when it hosts Atlantic-10 opponent Saint Joseph's at Patrick Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
