Challenge of training teachers for Common Core

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Starting next year schools and students will have new standards to meet, and Vermont's education secretary says getting teachers prepared could be a challenge.

It's called the Common Core and is designed to try and eliminate different standards in different states so all kids are meeting the same benchmarks.  Districts can create their own plan to meet the new standards.  Education Secretary Armando Vilaseca says it's important to build stronger math and science skills for K-12 -- and teachers are key.

"Right now we really are expecting any professional development and any money coming from the state going to districts to be tied to helping teachers transition to the new standard and to teach the new standards and therefore to learn what these standards require of themselves as professionals and it will take some time," Vilaseca said.

Vilaseca is stepping down in January as education secretary after five years.  He is our guest on You Can Quote Me this Sunday at 11 a.m.
