Scarola charges upgraded

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A Burlington man accused of savagely attacking his wife faced new charges Thursday.

James Scarola, 40, pleaded not guilty to an amended charge of aggravated attempted murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Prosecutors say in late September he drugged his children with sleeping pills and laid in wait for his wife to return home. They say when she did, Scarola bludgeoned her in the head with their son's baseball bat.

Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan says new evidence about the brutality and premeditation led to upgraded charge. "We are going to prosecute this case to the fullest extent and this is a priority for our office and we have many important cases but this is probably the most important case I think in our office if not the State of Vermont," he said.

Colleen Scarola is still recovering but prosecutors could not say to what extent she has regained her faculties. The couple had begun divorce proceedings at the time of the alleged attack. James Scarola's defense attorney declined a request for an on-camera interview but voiced concern that the case has become sensationalized.
