UVM, Castleton ready for big weekends

Posted: Updated:

The Vermont men's hockey team is back in action tomorrow night as the Cats open a two game, weekend series with Maine in Orono, ME.

Thanks to this season's modified, 20-game Hockey East schedule, this will be the only matchups of the season between the Cats and Black Bears.

Vermont split a pair of games with then second-ranked Notre Dame at the Gut this past weekend.

The team knows every potential win and every potential point counts, even this early in the season.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Closer to home, the Castleton men's hockey team prepares to enter a new era with their season opener tomorrow night at home against Southern Maine.

Former Plattsburgh State assistant coach Steve Moffat takes over as the new coach of the Spartans.

He replaces Alex Todd, who left after eight seasons to become an assistant coach at Division I Nebraska-Omaha.

Moffat takes over a team that lost its top three scorers to graduation, but returns a veteran defense backed by senior goaltender Erick Cinotti.

Castleton went 15-10-2 last season, falling to rival Norwich in the conference semifinals.

New leadership and a new energy leads to the hope of better results this year in Spartan Country.
